Cupping has been becoming more of a popular therapy as the marks are visible on popular athletes.  Cupping therapy uses suction cups on the skin for relieving pain through relaxing tight muscles and easing soreness.  It can also help with lymphatic and blood circulation, as well as helping to break up scar tissue.  While there are a myriad of other reason, those are the most common.  The cups are not painful, but rather would be described as more uncomfortable due to the suction.  It is believed the cupping disrupts the pain loop due to counter irritation (pain to reduce pain). The cups due leave round painless bruise marks on the skin for several days.  While they are not painful to touch, they can look like they are.  Cupping therapy is not recommended for older individuals or those with extremely thin or damaged skin as it can cause bleeding or permanent bruise marks.
